Mairead Martin bounced back from an opening 77 with an excellent round of 71 to claw her way back into the mix at the English Women’s Strokeplay Championship.

Lying on three-over after the opening round at The Manchester Golf Club, Martin started poorly with a double bogey on the first but replied with birdies on the second and sixth.

The Kanturk woman embarked on a blistering run with a birdie on 12 an eagle on the 14th and a birdie on 15 to roar into red figures before letting a shot go on 17.

Martin is six off the par set by home favourites Nellie One and Libby Bell.

Clodagh Coughlan (Douglas) is two shots further back on two-over while Elm Park star Emma Fleming is on three-over.

Lahinch’s Aideen Walsh made the cut on the mark on +8 after improving on an opening 81 with a 75.
