Simon Thornton earned his first win of the season on the PGA in Ireland region and his first since becoming Head Professional at Spa Golf Club with a one-shot win at the Irish Life Druids Glen Pro-Am.
Thornton shot a two-under 68 in what was his first ever run around the golf course pre or post changes.
The former European Tour winner finished a shot clear of Damien McGrane, Richard Bridges and Colm Moriarty while Dylan Burke, Brian McCormack and Richard Kilpatrick were a shot further back on level-par.
“I’m happy enough I haven’t played much this year and I haven’t won anything either so to win one is great. Bringing a win back to Spa for the first time which is nice it’s been fourteen or fifteen events so yeah all good.
“It was my first time playing Druids Glen so I don’t know what the changes were it was all new to me anyway. All I can say is wow, what a golf course, absolutely stunning. As much as I love the K Club I think it’s second to Adare Manor in parkland golf courses in Ireland it’s absolutely fantastic.
“It’s class even with the storm it was in great condition, in another six to twelve months when the greens settle down it will be even better but great design and great layout, I loved it.”
