A sublime bogey-free round of 66 has given Castle golfer Robert Moran a three-shot advantage heading into the final round of the AIG Irish Men’s Amateur Close Championship in Malone Golf Club.
Moran leads by three from reigning champion Quentin Carew (70) with Keith Egan (69) and overnight leader Jack Hearn (72) a shot further back on one-under-par.
Co. Armagh’s Adam Cromwell isn’t entirely out of the equation on level-par and will bid to make up a five shot cushion on Moran.
Three birdies in five holes around the turn on holes seven, eight and eleven gave Moran a one shot lead over Carew on four-under before a late birdie on 17 coupled late dropped shots from Carew saw Moran stretch his lead out to three this morning.
The Castle Golf Club man is bidding for his first national title having been a runner-up in this event before while Carew can become the first man to defend the Close since Rory McIlroy in 2006.
