Matthew McClean suffered a one hole loss to China’s Andi Xu as he exited the US Amateur Championship in the last-64.

Having made the cut for the matchplay on the number after 36 holes of strokeplay qualifying, McClean was drawn against seventh seed Xu who had finished fourth.

After losing the opening hole to a par the Malone man reeled off a par and back-to-back birdies to win the next three holes and move 2UP.

Xu levelled affairs with a birdie on seven and a birdie on nine before a birdie on eleven saw him turn the match on its head and he never looked back.

A par on 13 was enough for the Chinese star to move two ahead with five to play before McClean eagled the par-5 17th to take the match down the last.

The 18th was halved in pars brining McClean’s adventure to an end.
