McClean in good position to qualify for last-16 of Western Amateur

Matthew McClean recovered from an opening hole double bogey to card a second round 68 to move into the top-6 at the 121st Western Amateur Championship.

McClean shares sixth place on five-under-par, five shots off top spot ahead of the final 36 holes of strokeplay qualifying before the field is whittled down to the top-16 for the weekend matchplay.

After carding an opening six, the Malone man followed that up with a bogey on the sixth but back-to-back birdies on the seventh and eighth kickstarted his round.

A hat trick of birdies from the tenth moved the optometrist into the top-10 and he finished with a flourish, birdieing the last to come home in 32.

Orlando’s Brendan Valdes is on course to be the top qualifier on ten-under-par and he has a three-shot lead over Michael Thorbjornsen and Jackson Koivun.

Royal Dublin’s Hugh Foley missed the cut by nine shots on nine-over-par.
