Leona Maguire has only two names ahead of her in the betting for this week’s US Women’s Open at Pebble Beach after BoyleSports clipped her into 16/1 from 18/1 to break her major duck.
A lucrative win for the Cavan woman is being heavily backed after she bagged her second LPGA Tour victory last month at the Meijer LPGA Classic in Michigan, before a strong major bid the subsequent week saw her hold the lead going into the final round of the KPMG PGA Championship.
A final round of 74 at Baltusrol saw Maguire slip to 11th place on the final leaderboard, but strong support this week from patriotic punters means she is set to tee off third favourite in her bid to become the first Irish woman to win a major championship.
With the US Open, Evian Championship and Women’s Open all pencilled in before mid-August, the chances of Maguire landing her maiden major this summer have now been backed down to 5/1.
American sensation Rose Zhang has been made 12/1 favourite for a landmark victory of her own on the famous Californian links this week, with in-form South Korean JY Ko chalked up as her biggest danger at 14/1.
Punters hoping for a big payday might be tempted with the 500/1 on offer for Clare’s Aine Donegan after the Lousiana State University sophomore played her way into the event courtesy of a second-placed finish at U.S. Open Final Qualifying at The Peninsula Golf and Country Club in San Mateo, California.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “Leona Maguire’s second win on the US circuit has boosted support, but her near miss at the PGA Championship showed she can mix it on the biggest stage and she’s about to tee off at her shortest ever price for a major.”
