Alex Maguire has given himself a great chance of making it back-to-back championships this afternoon after two birdies in his last three holes saw him climb into a share of the lead on thirteen-under-par.
It was a morning 66 for the Laytown & Bettystown man to propel himself into the final group alongside England’s Charlie Crockett.
Maguire birdied the third, bogeyed the fourth and bogeyed the fifth but from there he was flawless, carding three successive gains from the eighth before finishing strong with birdies on 16 and 18.
Dundalk’s Caolan Rafferty carded a bogey-free 67 to move to ten-under and within three shots of the lead and he shares sixth place.
Castle’s Robert Moran was the leading Irishman through 36 holes but he will need something special this afternoon if he is to lift his first major gong after a one-over 73 dropped him six shots off the pace on seven-under.
Paul Conroy, Sean Keeling and Thomas Higgins are all on three-under-par while Mark Power and Colm Campbell will play alongside each other from two and four-over respectively.
