There’s nothing like sibling rivalry and getting one over on your brother or sister. On Saturday morning Tullamore’s Matthew Grehan was punching the air after storming around his home club in 63 shots to set a new course record.
This was an extra special moment because he managed to beat the previous record set by his brother Stuart who plies his trade on the Challenge Tour as a professional.
It’s been a long time coming for Grehan who birdied the 18th to make history as he has shot rounds of 65 on three occasions in Tullamore so it’s fair to say he has been knocking on the door of his brother’s record.
“It’s great, I’ve been knocking on the door I suppose,’ said Grehan who was seven-under for the round and plays off plus three. “I’ve shot 65 around Tullamore three times, so to shoot 63 is fantastic.”
There’ll be bragging rights for Matthew in the Grehan household after he held an eight-footer for the famous 63 which drew a chorus of roars from himself and his playing partners.
“Yeah there’ll definitely be a bit of bragging and a bit of slagging. I knew going down the last I had to birdie it being six-under. Hit a good drive and hit it close, knew it had to hole it so there was only one place the ball was going! Just ram it at the hole and it doesn’t matter if it goes by the hole.
“That’s my only course record but I’ve been saying to the lads I normally play golf with at the weekend that I would break the course record at some point so yeah, today was the day.
“It definitely makes it sweeter knowing I’ve beaten Stuart alright. I think he was a little bit disgusted over it! But it’s nice to have this one over him because I know we’ve been tied a few times before so it’s great to finally beat it.”
