Fota Island’s John Doyle has opened up a two-shot lead after day one of the Connacht Boys’ Amateur Open Championship in Ballinrobe.

Doyle shot a three-under 70 and he leads talented Douglas starlet Jack Murphy who was the only other player to shoot under-par after a 72.

Doyle found himself a couple over after a double-bogey on the par-5 4th before he raced into the mix with birdies on 6, 8 and 11.

The Cork youngster finished strongly with birdies on 14 and 18 to come home in a cool 33 strokes and take the lead.

Murphy carded three birdies and two bogeys in his one-under round while Co. Louth’s Gavin Tiernan, Charlie Mooney of Ballinasloe and Drumlin’s Noah Bickerstaff are all well placed on level-par after rounds of 73.

It’s a tightly packed leaderboard with just three shots separating second and eleventh while the cut fell at seven-over-par.
