Bernard Quigley and John McDermott made light of brutal winds to take the top prizes at the latest TaylorMade Winter Series outing at Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links.
Over 80 players took to the fairway armed with a fresh complimentary sleeve of the new TaylorMade TP golf ball and given winds were gusting over 30kph, the extra ammunition was most welcomed.
Quigley and McDermott were able to control their flights in the breeze, however with the Naas pro Quigley capturing the Nett prize with a superb two-over 73 in the conditions – two strokes better than Limerick’s Tim Rice who pipped Laytown and Bettystown’s Cian Geraghty on a count-back for second.
On his first outing in the 2021/22 Winter series, Quigley’s high-quality ball-striking came to the fore. Starting with a solid par four on the first, he picked up a birdie 3 on the 375-yard 2nd hole.
A dropped shot at the long par 4 5th and a double bogey 6 at the difficult dogleg 8th hole saw the Naas Professional make the turn in 38. A birdie 3 kicked off a superbly consistent run of 7 pars amid gusting winds that made even short putting a challenge. A finishing bogey 5 at the strong 18th hole would not prove fatal as Bernard topped the field in this week’s TaylorMade sponsored event.
In the Gross competition, Grange pro McDermott came up trumps with a 73 to pip Irish international amateur Keith Egan to the spoils.
A vintage display of good iron play and putting produced a balanced scorecard for McDermott with nines of 36 and 37 producing a wonderful score of 73 in strong south west winds.
John’s brother and fellow Grange pro, Michael claimed a podium finish with a solitary birdie in his 75.
