Golf Ireland has announced the teams for the upcoming Carey Cup and Spirit International.
The Carey Cup sees Ireland play the Metropolitan Golf Association in the biennial event. The 2021 competition will see an expanded format introduced with the teams expanding from six to ten players. Four women’s players will join six men in the Irish team, when the event take place at the Montgomerie Course at Carton House on October 12th and 13th.
Three of Ireland’s team from the recent Men’s Home Internationals are selected with Marc Boucher (Carton House), Hugh Foley (Royal Dublin) and Robert Moran (Castle) earning selections. The trio will be joined by David Kitt (Athenry), Richard Knightly (Royal Dublin) and Jake Whelan (Grange).
Paula Grant (Lisburn), Kate Lanigan (Hermitage), Rachel Thompson (Cork) and Aideen Walsh (Lahinch) will make history by becoming the first Irish women to compete in the event.
Four players will represent Ireland at the Spirit International in Texas from November 4th to 6th. The event takes place at Whispering Pines GC, and will see the Irish team compete in Team and Individual events in a 54-hole competition.
Sara Byrne (Douglas), Paul Coughlan (Enniscorthy), Aine Donegan (Lahinch) and Sam Murphy (Portumna) will compete in the Men’s and Women’s competitions, with 20 countries being represented.
