Former Masters and US Open Champion Angel Cabrera has been arrested in Brazil for extradition to his homeland to face charges for several alleged crimes.
Affectionately known as ‘El Pato’ for his waddling walking style, police revealed that the 51-year old Argentinian was arrested in an upper-class area of Rio de Janeiro, though they never released Cabrera’s name. However, reports from two federal police sources confirmed to Associated Press that the man in question was Cabrera.
Cabrera will be held in custody until his extradition to Argentina with a statement saying he’ll face charges of assault, theft, illegal intimidation and repeated disrespect to authorities between 2016 and last year. It had been widely reported in his homeland earlier this month that Cabrera’s ex-wife, Silva Rivadero, had filed two charges against Cabrera. Another former partner, Cecilia Torres, also alleged that Cabrera had assaulted her in 2016, attempting to run her over in his car.
The news will come as a shock to fans of Cabrera, who has been playing his golf on the over-50’s Champions Tour of late. A hero of the sport in South America, the big-hitting Argentinian famously pipped Tiger Woods by a shot to the US Open title in 2007 before collecting his Green Jacket with a playoff win at the 2009 Masters. He was an absentee from last November’s renewal due to wrist surgery. It’s unclear when we’ll see ‘El Pato’ on a fairway again.
