Nine-time Major winning Gary Player has been honoured in being appointed Wentworth Club ambassador.
Player is the most successful international golfer of all time. He has achieved the kind of worldwide acclaim reserved for only a handful of sporting greats having won nine Major Championships on the Regular Tour, and nine Major Championships on the Senior Tour.
The champion South African not only has captured 163 tournaments in his career but the present 84-year old holds the distinction of being the only golfer in history to win the career Grand Slam on both Tours.
“I am delighted to be representing Wentworth, a Club that I have a longstanding relationship with. I first arrived at Wentworth in 1955 and it is a place that holds a special place in both mine and my wife’s heart,” said Player.
“Of particular fondness are the memories of the Wentworth Matchplay of which I was able to win five.
“I consider these wins to be some of the finest of my career. Furthermore, I have always had a close relationship with the Members and I look forward to seeing them all soon. The courses are always in immaculate condition and the Club continues to try to find ways to improve and is consequently a brand that I am very proud to be associated with.”
Neil Coulson, General Manager at Wentworth said:
“We are delighted to announce Gary Player as our new ambassador at Wentworth Club. Gary’s relationship with the Club has now spanned more than 60 years. During his playing career Gary was a regular visitor to Wentworth treating the golfing world to many special moments including his 5 Matchplay victories.
“In recent years, Gary’s visits have provided some wonderful opportunities for our Members to listen to stories and learn from the great man. A true golfing legend, we are honoured to extend our relationship further and are excited by the opportunities this will provide our Members.”
