Kate Lanigan fired a one-under par round of 71 to be best of the Irish on day one of the 90th Portuguese International Ladies Amateur Championship at Montado Hotel & Golf Resort.

The Hermitage amateur carded four birdies on her way to a fine opening effort and trails overnight leader Smilla Tarning Sønderby by five strokes in a tie for 13th ahead of round two.

The leading Dane took route 66 to the clubhouse with her six-under tally edging World Number 5 Italian, Alessia Nobilio into second place.

As for Ireland’s other competing stars, Lisburn’s Paula Grant and Kirkistown Castle’s Beth Coulter share 23rd after returning one-over par 73s while Clandeboye’s Jessica Ross sits in a tie for 36th after signing for a two-over-par 74.

Ireland’s travelling quartet are not competing in the Nations Cup this week which sees Denmark head Italy by two strokes after day one.
