Paul Touhy and Hugh Foley took the prizes at a bitterly cold edition of the TaylorMade Winter Series at Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links.
68 players braved the elements that saw Cahir Park 4 handicapper Touhy make the most of his trip to Portmarnock in a storming finish to win this week’s Nett prize.
Touhy birdied 15 and 16 and parred the last two holes for an excellent round of 74 – 70 Nett – to beat Dun Laoghaire pro Richard O’Donovan by three.
Royal Dublin +3 handicapper, Foley was the star of the show in the Gross category with his two-over par round of 73.
Foley got off to a dream start with birdies on 2 and 3 but followed them with back-to-back bogeys on 4 and 5.
Turning in two-over par, Hugh made two further birdies on 11 and 15 only to drop shots on the difficult 13th and 17th. Still, a great round of golf from the highly experienced Links expert!
Foley edged out Newlands and Portmarnock Links man Jake Whelan (74) and Rathfarnham’s Eric Byrne (74) who raced home in a superb 34 strokes.
Conditions were incredibly difficult on Tuesday with temperatures reaching a high of 4 degrees with a stiff breeze blowing across the links making it feel even colder.
A special mention goes out to Karl Goodwin, Pro from Beaverstown Golf Club. Karl was level par standing on the 17th tee. He was left to rue a costly bogey to just missed out on a prize in his first outing at Portmarnock.
