The European tag team of Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter had to settle for outright fifth despite turning on the style on the final day of the QBE Shootout in Florida.

Trailing a five-way tie for top spot heading into the last round, the pair combined for a best-ball nine-under par round of 63 on Sunday to lay down a marker to the rest of the field.

However, despite the valiant effort, fellow European Rory Sabbatini and his partner Kevin Tway took the spoils after birdieing the closing two holes for a stunning 12-under round of 60 and a worthy two-stroke victory.

Part of that five-way tie for the second-round lead, Sabbatini and Tway finished at 31-under 185 in the three-day event at Tiburon Golf Club. Jason Kokrak and J.T. Poston were second after a 62.

Brendon Todd-Billy Horschel and Harold Varner III-Ryan Palmer tied for third at 28 under after 63s with Poulter and McDowell in fifth while LPGA Tour star Lexi Thompson and PGA Tour player Sean O’Hair were last in the 12-team field at 8 under after a 70.

McDowell and Poulter took home a healthy consolation cheque worth
$229,000 for their Ryder Cup reunion.
