Ireland secured a resounding 5.5-2.5 victory over Scotland to get their Senior Women’s Home Internationals title defence off to a flying start at Co. Sligo.
Looking to make home advantage count out west this week, the girls in green dominated the morning foursomes with The Island’s Gertie McMullen and Maria O’Reilly from Headfort getting the first point on the board with a 4&3 win before Malahide’s Alison Taylor & Ballybunion’s Margaret McAuliffe followed suit with a 2&1 victory while East Berkshire’s Laura Webb and Portumna’s Suzanne Corcoran completed a clean sweep of the morning session, 4&3.
In a commanding position heading into a wild afternoon, Ireland needed the cushion to settle the nerves as Donabate’s recent Irish Senior Women’s Open Stroke Play Champion, Pat Doran went down 4&3 to Scotland’s Elaine Moffat before Taylor was pipped 1UP by Stirling’s Alison Davidson.
However, Ireland had nothing to fear. Webb romped home 7&5 in the third singles match before O’Reilly followed her teammate in, 3&2 as Ireland ran out deserving winners.
England are the only other unbeaten team after day one as they overcame a valiant Welsh effort, 4.5-3.5.
Ireland face Wales on Wednesday with the match getting underway at 9am.
