Eddie McCormack’s love affair with the Connacht Mid-Amateur Championship continued after the Galwegian picked up his fourth win at the event since 2009.
The man to beat once more, McCormack had work to do after an opening round of 74 saw him trailing Athenry’s Joe Bernie Jnr by four after a tough morning in Roscommon.
However, the Cavan native was far from finished and fired a spectacular three-under par 68 in the afternoon to blow the field away by three shots.
Having started the second 18 in a seven-way share of sixth, McCormack had a serious task on his hands to ensure a fourth title on the mantelpiece and a first since 2017, and despite an opening hole birdie, he was duly up for the task.
He bounced back with a birdie on the second before adding four more in a sizzling salvo that changed the course of the tournament. 32 strokes to the turn and home in 26 was enough to seal his three shot win, with Bernie Jnr back in second after he added a 75 to his day one 70 while Banbridge’s Jim Carvill took third after scores of 73 and 74.
