Leading qualifier Beth Coulter was one of 16 players to safely book themselves into the last 16 of the Irish Girls’ Close Championship at Galway Golf Club.
Despite the wet and blustery conditions, Kirkistown Castle’s Coulter built a significant early lead in the match and while Lauren Kelly (Ballykisteen) held three long putts in a row at the turn, Coulter signed the match off 6&4 to set up a match with Canice Screene (Hermitage) this morning.
Screene, who faced Emma Thorne of Elm Park in her opening match, needed 23 holes to secure a result when Thorne posed a comeback late in the round.
Other representatives at last week’s European Girls’ Team Championships Anna Foster, Nicole Joyce-Moreno, Sara Byrne, Aine Donegan and Kate Lanigan have all progressed to the last 16 also.
All is not lost either for those players who lost on Wednesday. The matchplay continues in the Plate flight which will tee off from 09:20am today following the Championship matches which begin at 08:00am.
