Kirkistown Castle’s Beth Coulter enters today’s match play stages of the Irish Girls’ Close Championship as leading qualifier after winning the Blake Cup on a score of 146 at Galway Golf Club.

Co-leader after round one alongside Lahinch’s Aine Donegan, Coulter began her second round with two birdies and an eagle. A mid-round run of bogeys was balanced with a second eagle on the par five 5th and a final birdie to finish ensured a second round 74 and a level par total. Coulter now faces Lauren Kelly of Ballykisteen in today’s first round

Donegan and Douglas’ Sara Byrne settled for a tie for second on one over, a second round 71 the highlight for Byrne. Her round included four birdies on the opening nine holes at Galway.

The top-32 players now progress to Wednesday’s knockout matchplay stages. Those beaten in today’s first round will advance to compete in the Pat Fletcher Trophy (Plate). Both the Championship and Plate will conclude on Friday afternoon.
