John Ross Galbraith and Jonathan Caldwell got off to flying starts on day one of the EuroPro Tour’s COBRA PUMA NXT LVL Championship.
The pair posted superb eight-under par rounds of 65 without a bogey between them at Macdonald Portal Hotel, Golf, and Spa to take full advantage of ideal scoring conditions. Both players fired six birdies and an eagle and sit just one shot behind Marco Penge’s lead heading into round two.
Tullamore’s Stuart Grehan is back in a tie for 14th after enjoying a great start with a five-under par 68. Royal Dublin’s Niall Kearney finds himself outside the top-40 despite carding a three-under par 70 while Cameron Raymond (-2) and Brendan McCarroll (-1) also face uphill battles to make the 36-hole cut even having broken par on the first day.
It’s Penge who sets the standard after posting an opening round of 64 for nine under, including eight birdies and an eagle to give himself a cushion ahead of the second round tomorrow.
There are four players tied for second with Galbraith (Whitehead Golf Club), Jonathan Caldwell (Clandeyboye Golf Club), Josh Hilleard (Farrington Park/G4L) and Richard Mansell (Beau Desert Golf Club) all going eight under for opening rounds of 65 to be one shot behind Penge.
It was a strong day of scoring with inviting conditions in Tarporley with Daniel Gaunt (Burhill Golf Club) ending up on seven under with eight birdies to put in a good showing.
James Frazer (Machynys Peninsula) set out from the traps in some style going seven deep through his first six including a hole in one on the 14th before finishing day one on six under.
