Milltown’s Deirdre Walsh returned a two-over par 74 to set the standard on day one of the Irish Senior Women’s Close Championship at Naas.
Walsh was super consistent all day, carding fifteen pars and a birdie with just two holes tripping her up – the 7th and 9th – where she carded a bogey and a double.
Walsh’s plus-two total leads the field by one with Malahide’s Alison Taylor, Royal Portrush’s Mary MacLaren and East Berkshire’s Laura Webb just in behind at plus-three.
Meanwhile Portumna’s Suzanne Corcoran’s bid for three-in-a-row got off to a solid if somewhat unspectacular start after opening with a nine-over par 81 that sees her just inside the top-10 heading into round two.
Competitors will complete the stroke play section of the tournament on Wednesday with 16 players qualifying for the Championship Matchplay and the next 16 qualifiers qualifying to compete for the Plate.
