Jonathan Caldwell is one of five players tied for the top heading into the second round of the EuroPro Tour’s Matchroom Sport Championship at Harleyford Golf Club.
The Clandeboye professional fired five birdies and an eagle on his way to a sizzling 66 to sit atop the board at six-under par.
Caldwell is joined by Seve Benson, Wentworth Club, Andrew Wilson of Rockliffe Hall, Guy Woodman of ProAgenda.com, and Pavan Sagoo of Ealing who all went six under through their first rounds.
With the first pair going out at 6:30, the early morning groups had the better of the weather with the rain closing in by lunchtime and a much higher wind, but that didn’t deter many.
Headfort’s Brian Casey took advantage of the better conditions to post a two-under par 70 on day one, the same number as Ballymena’s Dermot McElroy who carded seven birdies to sit alongside Casey in a share of 36th.
With plenty of Irish raiders taking their chance, Tullamore’s Stuart Grehan, Whitehead’s John Ross Galbraith and Naas’ Conor O’Rourke all made solid starts with one-under par rounds.
Kilkenny’s Luke Donnelly is joined by Old Conna’s Neil O’Briain and Headfort’s Joe Dillon in a tie for 76th at level par.
While Owen Crooks (+1) and Royal Dublin’s Niall Kearney (+3) have work to do to make the weekend cut.
The second round continues today after which a cut to the leading 50 professionals and ties will be made.
Highlights of The Matchroom Sport Championship will air on Sky Sports on 11, June 2019.
