Gary Murphy shot a three-under 69 in the opening round of the Legends Tour’s Sergio Melpignano Senior Italian Open at San Domenico Golf Club on the upper heel of the Italian boot and he sits tied for 14th.

The K Club Head Professional hasn’t had the best of seasons by his own admission on the European Seniors circuit, but by firing in four birdies with just the one bogey on day one, he’s off to his best start of the year thus far.

He started with a par on the par-5 10th, then bogeyed the 11th but that would be his only dropped shot of the day and three birdies over the next seven holes got him to the turn at -2. Another birdie on the fifth would be his only deviation from par on the front side and he’s just a shot off the top 10 with 36 holes to go.

German Thomas Gogele, Wales’ Bradley Dredge and Allesandro Tadini of Italy share the lead at -8, two shots clear of Joakim Haeggman and Paul Streeter.

“There’s not a lot of rough,” said Dredge afterwards, “so I can hit a lot of drivers and I can’t do that a lot of weeks. I can’t just smash it anywhere, but being able to get it out here does give me an advantage.”
