Millicent team captain Vera Hanlon says it would be a dream come true to see her side claim the Flogas Irish Mixed Foursomes title this weekend.
The Kildare golf club take on Fermoy at Oughterard tomorrow morning as the semi-finals get underway with Achill Island and Malahide in the other final four tie.
The Irish Mixed Fourball also takes place with Castlebar against Belvoir Park in the first semi-final before Woodstock and Portlaoise tee off.
This weekend’s Inter-Club events are the last of the All-Ireland Finals and Hanlon says it has been a memorable journey for her team which began in April.
“It has been amazing,” said Hanlon.
“We won the first round against Edenderry. We went down and played them and it was a great day and then we were meeting Portarlington and our players were getting scarce on the ground.
“I realised if we went forward in this competition, with the format we needed to get wins. Then it was a matter of we have the women, bringing the right guys and convincing them how enjoyable it would be to play in this mixed competition.
“Alan Curry helped me with it and we got them on board and after that it was just, we put a panel there together, when one player wasn’t available the other was and we kept winning. The momentum grew.
“Once we got three rounds behind us we started to believe in ourselves, like any other Inter-Club competition. We have never gone this far in this particular competition. We have had a good run this year at junior and senior level and we are all riding on the back of Brian Doran’s great success.”
Doran was recently crowned the Bridgestone Men’s Order of Merit champion, and that confidence seeped into the Millicent ranks as they progressed to the quarter-finals and then this weekend in Oughterard.
“Every time we would win, we had good talks. The team were giving everything. They were going for the practice rounds, they were committing,” said Hanlon.
“With each game they were definitely committing more and giving more. Certainly since we got to the Leinster final and then all of a sudden we are now travelling to Oughterard.
“All these guys have jobs and they are in full-time jobs. They were making huge commitments. Giving up their time.
“It would be like a dream come true to win this competition.”
