World number one Kipp Popert’s impressive run continued at the Irish G4D Invitational at Carton House where he overtook Brendan Lawlor and held Alan Gaynor at bay to secure victory.

Lawlor had set the pace after round one with a four-under 69 on the par-73 O’Meara Course, with Popert one back at -3 and Gaynor one further adrift at -2.

But Popert is on a dream streak having won the G4D @ Magical Kenya Open back in February, the G4D Open at Woburn in May, teamed up with Heather Gilks to take the G4D Nations Cup at the Belfry, and held off Lawlor once more to take the G4D @ BMW PGA at Wentworth last week.

And he was always going to be a hard man to stop. Birdies on the first and fourth holes saw him take sole possession of the lead and an eagle-three at the par-5 sixth put clear daylight between himself and Lawlor and Gaynor, after the former had traded a birdie and a bogey over the opening six and the latter had birdied the fourth and sixth.

Popert reeled off eight pars after the eagle, and though Gaynor would trim the gap slightly with back-to-back birdies on nine and 10 following a bogey on eight, two strokes was as close as he’d come.

Popert signed off with three consecutive birdies for a closing six-under 67 and a nine-under tally, while Gaynor birdied 17 and 18 for a 70 and solo second at -5.

Lawlor will be disappointed not to have been in the mix coming down the stretch, but he too birdied the last for a closing 74 and takes solo third at -3, with Mike Browne and Lachlan Wood sharing fourth place at -2.
