Shane Lowry has now fallen into 20/1 from 28/1 with BoyleSports to add to Ireland’s gold medal tally when he tees it up in Paris in search of Olympic glory this week.
Lowry has been steadily backed since his performance at The Open Championship earlier this month, where a second Claret Jug ultimately eluded the Offaly man when Xander Schauffele romped clear at Royal Troon.
While a second major slipped from the grasp of Lowry in Scotland, support is snowballing for one of Ireland’s flag bearers on the River Seine to emulate swimmer Armagh’s Daniel Wiffen by claiming a place on top of the podium. Rory McIlroy is also being well backed as third favourite at 8/1 at Le Golf National south of Paris, which hosted Europe’s 17.5 – 10.5 Ryder Cup victory over the United States in 2018.
Open winner Schauffele is the 6/1 second favourite to add a second Olympic gold medal to his CV, with compatriot and world number one Scottie Scheffler rated 4/1 favourite.
Ireland’s hopes of an Olympic golf medal don’t end there, as the field for next week’s women’s event features 20/1 shot Leona Maguire and County Antrim’s Stephanie Meadow (250/1).
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “Ireland has the taste for gold now after Daniel Wiffen’s heroics in the pool and we’re playing a strong hand in the golf with Rory McIlroy and an in-form Shane Lowry tipped to top the podium.”
