Amy Yang could afford a late wobble such was her dominance at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship as she finally won a major title.
The Korean eased to a three-shot win on seven-under-par after a final round of 72 but the gap was seven shots at one stage before she dropped three shots in two holes with a bogey on 16 and a double bogey on 17 but her victory was inevitable.
“I always want to win a major and I came close several times,” said Yang.
“You know, at one point I thought will I ever win a major championship before I retire? And I finally did it, and it’s just amazing.”
Yang made the perfect start on Sunday with an opening birdie and she recovered from a bogey on the third with birdies on the 5th and 8th to ease to the turn in 34.
After dropping a shot on the 10th she seized the championship with birdies on 11 and 13 to roar seven clear and make the closing stretch nothing more than a procession despite coughing up a few shots.
It was too little too late for the chasing pack with Lilia Vu, Jin Young Ko and Miyu Yamashita sharing second place on four-under-par.
“I’ve lost the words right now,” said a teary Yang on the final green after a champagne shower for the ages. “It’s all the hard work our team did together, and I’m so grateful for that. All four rounds, it was tough out there, but I just trusted what I prepared, and just I did my best all week.”
It was not the weekend that Leona Maguire would have been expecting. A final round of 76 saw her fall to a share of 24th place on four-over.
She did end on a positive note however, after five bogeys in sixteen holes she did manage to birdie the par-3 17th which had cost her two double bogeys in previous rounds.
