Niall Kearney closed out with a one-under 71 on the third and final round of the Clutch Pro Tour’s Caversham event, finishing in a five-way tie for second and picking up a decent paycheck as a result.
After coming screaming up the leaderboard with a bogey-free eight-under on day two, he started round three in similar fashion, birdieing two of the opening five holes as he set out in pursuit of John Gough who began the final day five shots clear of the Dubliner.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t keep the pedal down and a bogey at 15 was his only deviation from par on the way home, carding a 71 that moved him to -10 and eventually settled for a tie for second, taking home just under £3,000 for his troubles.
Liam Grehan matched Kearney’s tally on the day and he ended the week on -4 in a tie for 20th with Daniel Brennan on -1 and Conor O’Rourke on +1 after rounds of 73 and 76 respectively.
John Gough, the Englishman with County Meath roots, was sublime throughout in his maiden professional campaign. The 2023 Irish Amateur Open winner did much of the heavy lifting on day one as his 11-birdie haul helped him to an opening 62 and he followed up with back-to-back 68s to seal an eight-shot victory.
