Shane Lowry’s final round at the RBC Canadian Open resulted in a two-under 68 – his third in succession – and it lifted him to a tie for 32nd, but the real drama in the group centred around playing partner CT Pan and the Taiwanese player’s caddie, veteran looper Mike ‘Fluff’ Cowan.

Playing the third hole, 76-year-old Cowan – who formerly caddied for Tiger Woods and helped navigate him to his record-breaking 12-stroke 1997 Masters victory – slipped and injured himself, and was unable to continue.

In need of assistance, Pan looked to the crowd and found an alternative in the form of a husky gentleman in a Masters t-shirt.

Lowry and the Offaly man’s caddie Darren Reynolds greeted the substitute on his arrival, but it wasn’t long before he was feeling the heat and after just one hole, passed the baton – in this case an oversized Tour pro’s bag – onto another spectator.

As we all know, relay races are run in four legs, and after managing his way through the rest of the front nine unscathed, the bag changed hands yet again.

Pan’s wife had offered to step in – and this wouldn’t have been her first rodeo – but the fourth and final leg would be run by a trained professional as Al Ridell, who caddies for Frenchman Paul Barjon who’d missed the cut, took up duties.

Never one to miss an opportunity for a laugh, Lowry quipped: “Fourth caddie? That’s a f—king record now!” when Ridell joined the group on the 10th tee box.

Thankfully, no further caddie changes were required, and we wish ‘Fluff’ a speedy recovery and thank the fans who stepped up to the plate.
