Rory McIlroy has filed for divorce from wife Erica Stoll after seven years of marriage.
McIlroy submitted documents to a court in Florida on Monday while the details have not been disclosed.
The pair first met in 2012 when Stoll was working for the PGA at the Ryder Cup where he was famously almost late to the golf course for his Ryder Cup singles match with Keegan Bradley in Medinah.
Back then, the four-time major winner was dating tennis superstar Caroline Wozniacki whom he became engaged to.
However, their wedding plans were canceled after they split ahead of the BMW PGA Championship in Wentworth in 2014 which McIlroy won, triggering a golden run which saw him win three tournaments in a row including the Open Championship and US PGA Championship in Valhalla, the site of this week’s PGA.
McIlroy arrives in Valhalla this week following back-to-back wins on the PGA Tour and has recently been rejected from returning to the PGA Tour’s policy board.
McIlroy’s management team have since confirmed the reports stressing his desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and as amicable as possible. He will not be making further comment.
The Holywood man is due to speak to the media on Wednesday ahead of the PGA Championship as he bids to end a near ten-year wait for a fifth major championship.
