Tiger Woods will wear his famous Sunday red this season but it will be without the iconic Nike swoosh after he announced that he has parted ways with the sportswear giant after 27 years.
Woods had worn Nike apparel since signing a five-year $40 million contract upon turning pro as a 20-year-old in 1996 and it culminated in one of the most lucrative endorsement deals in sports history totalling at $500 million.
Woods won all fifteen of his majors associated with Nike and his Sunday outfit of a black cap, black trousers, black shoes and most importantly, a red shirt made him one of the most recognisable sportsmen on the planet, and he also featured the attire in many famous Nike commercials.
“Over 27 years ago, I was fortunate enough to start a partnership with one of the most iconic brands in the world,” Woods said in a social media statement.
“The days since have been filled with so many amazing moments and memories. Phil Knight’s passion and vision brought this Nike and Nike Golf partnership together and I personally want to thank him, along with the other Nike employees and incredible athletes I have had the pleasure of working with along the way. People will ask if there is another chapter. Yes, there will certainly be another chapter. See you in LA!”
Rumours of a potential split between Woods and Nike dominated the Christmas period amid reports that Nike is planning to shut down its golf division entirely meaning fellow Nike athlete, Rory McIlroy, may have to look elsewhere for clothing.
Nike has been gradually diminishing its investment in golf, it stopped making equipment in 2016 while Woods has been wearing Footjoy shoes rather than his customary black Nikes, which he says are for health considerations after shattering his leg in a life threatening car accident in February 2021.
