Despite and improved second round of 70, Pádraig Harrington’s season came to a premature end as he missed the cut at the RSM Classic in St Simons Island.
Harrington moved up to level-par but was still four shots outside the cut mark as Swedish Ryder Cup star Ludvig Aberg continued his rapid rise with a flawless 64 to open a one-shot lead on eleven-under-par.
Aberg carded six birdies on his round including three in a row on the fifth, sixth and seventh before adding three more on eleven, thirteen and eighteen to move into position to claim his maiden PGA Tour title having only graduated from college in the summer.
The Swede leads a trio of Denny McCarthy, Sam Ryder and Eric Cole (all -10) with Matt Kuchar among a large contingent at nine-under-par.
“I know my capabilities and I know my strengths,” said Åberg, who finished at Texas Tech University this spring and earned a PGA TOUR card as the No. 1 player in the PGA TOUR University ranking. “But also, to be able to do it this quickly, probably not. It’s been so much fun.
“I still pinch myself in the morning whenever I wake up that I actually get to do this for a living, but it’s really cool and I’m looking forward to a bunch of years ahead of me.”
“I feel like I’ve been striking the ball quite well, which obviously is nice in the wind, which is quite tricky to kind of maneuver,” Åberg said. “I made a few par putts today … and then it’s nice to get those momentum putts and to keep the round going a little bit. But there’s no guarantees, but if I keep doing what I’m doing today, I like my chances.”
