Castle amateur Robert Moran is the leading Irishman after the opening day of Alps Tour Qualifying Final Stage.

The Irish Close champion carded a two-under 69 at Italy’s Golf Nazionale to lie in a share of eleventh place and six shots off the lead held by English amateur Mason Essam.

Portmarnock amateur Brandon St John is level-par alongside Carton House amateur and Irish international Marc Boucher while AJ McCabe is the leading Irish professional on two-over after a 73.

Behind McCabe are Michael Young and Walker Cup star Alex Maguire on three-over while Luke Donnelly is two shots further back.

Joseph Hanney is eight-over after a 79.

At the conclusion of the 54 holes, the top 35 players and ties ranked according to score, will be eligible to receive Category 6 membership for the 2024 Alps Tour Season.

The rest of the players who will make the cut, and finish between the 36th and 65th position will be eligible to receive Category 8 membership.

The remaining players who compete in this Final Stage and conclude the tournament between the 66th and 156th position will be eligible to receive membership in Category 9.
