Tiger Woods has taken a swipe at LIV Golf, declaring that his new indoor golf league will be ‘very simple’ in comparison to the format of the Saudi backed tour.
Woods is co-owner of the TGL alongside McIlroy which starts in January and will be played on a simulator with an indoor short game area inside a dome holding 1,500 fans in Florida.
McIlroy had to leap to the defence of the TGL and refute claims that it was just another gimmicky start up formed to prevent players from leaving the PGA TOUR for LIV. Woods says the TGL will help attract a younger audience to the game of golf, calling it a ‘modern twist of traditional golf.’
“Some of the stuff I’ve seen in LIV… I couldn’t figure out what the hell was going on,” Woods said. “Here, it’s very simple.
“Generally, golf takes about five or six hours to play,” Woods said. “In today’s world, it is hard for anybody to go [that time] without looking at their phones. The shorter the time, the better.”
Woods who has not competed since withdrawing from the Masters in April will compete for Jupiter Links GC and is the only player announced for the team so far.
“I expect Jupiter Links GC to showcase the golf culture of my hometown as we compete against the best players in the world.”
McIlroy will line out for Boston Common alongside Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott and Tyrrell Hatton and he was keen that the upstarts should not be compared to LIV.
“It’s meant to be complementary, this is not meant to be disrespectful in any way,” he said at the launch. “Tiger and I, one of the first things we said is ‘if we are going to do this we are going to have to partner with the PGA Tour in some way and make this complementary’.”
