Lucas Glover has admitted the reported rift within the American Ryder Cup team supposedly led by Patrick Cantlay broke his heart.
Cantlay’s alleged refusal to wear a hat during the competition in Rome was because he felt players should be compensated for playing in the Ryder Cup.
Glover who won twice on the PGA Tour towards the end of the campaign was unlucky to miss out on a place on Zach Johnson’s team.
“I would have loved to have been there [the Ryder Cup],” Glover told SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio.
“It broke my heart the week after to hear how splintered the [locker] room was.
“And things about money, and all the other different things, that is not at all what the Ryder Cup stands for. Like what going on what I have been read and what I have been told. I have talked to some people that were there and in the fight and it breaks my heart to hear that. That is not what it is about.”
The 2009 US Open champion has struggled with the putting yips in recent years and appeared to be nowhere near Zach Johnson’s team before picking up successive wins at the Wyndham Championship and FedEx St Jude Championship which brought him into the rearview mirror.
Unfortunately his burst of form proved too little too late as he missed out on a wildcard pick.
“It’s easy to say three weeks after, two weeks after, and unfortunately, they lost, but yeah, I would have liked to have been there,” Glover said. “I think I could have brought some different things to the table.
“It’s about the only thing I haven’t done, and I still want to.”
