Pádraig Harrington is six shots off the pace after the opening round of the Dominion Energy Charity Classic as the first leg of the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs got underway on the Champions Tour.
Harrington birdied the last to shoot in red figures for a one-under 71 and he lies in a share of 16th place while Harrison Frazar leads on seven-under after an impressive 65.
The three-time major champion started well with two birdies in six holes but bogeys on the seventh and tenth followed and nothing much was happening for him until he closed with a birdie to keep himself in the hunt.
Darren Clarke has work to do after a one-over 73.
Frazar birdied the four par fives to hit the front as he chases his maiden Champions Tour victory in his 41st start.
“I feel very comfortable with the putter right now. So you’re going to end up with a lot of five-, six-, seven-footers in stuff like this, especially as the greens are so fast, and I made all of them today. I might not make them all tomorrow, but I did today.
“I’m very happy with it. Like I said, I hit a few good shots early. Like I hit it close on 1, I hit it close on 3 and I knocked it on the par 5 in two, No. 6. So three relatively easy, but in the middle of that I made a couple of five-, six-footers at the same time to keep it going.
“Yeah, it’s a good score. It’s not easy, but the greens are perfect. If you can make ’em, you can get it.”
