McKinstry and Walsh lead the way in Portsalon

Cairndhu golfer Ryan McKinstry shot a brilliant 67 to hold the lead after Round 1 of the Irish Men’s Mid-Amateur.

McKinstry’s albatross on the 11th was the highlight at Portsalon as he raced into four-shot advantage at -5.

Only two players shot under-par on the opening day with Allan Kiernan (Forrest Little) finishing up on -1. Meanwhile, Dean O’Riordan (Fermoy) and Shane Kelly (Ballinasloe) both ended their days on level par.

Ben Best (Rathmore) and Darragh McMenamin (Letterkenny) both shot 73 to lead the Men’s Over-40 category on +1 with Seamus Cullen (Slieve Russell) and Barry Gillespie (Tullamore) T3 on +3.

Aideen Walsh (Lahinch) took the lead after Round 1 of the Women’s event thanks to a 71. She is on -1, ahead of Emma O’Driscoll (Ballybunion) who is second on +1 following her 73. Sinead Ní Cheilleachair (Tullamore) is back in third on +7.
