After securing back-to-back wins on the LIV Golf tour, two-time Ryder Cupper Bryson DeChambeau has admitted that he felt he deserved at least a call from US Captain Zach Johnson to tell him that he wasn’t going to be part of the team heading to Rome this week.
“Yeah, definitely,” he said in his post event press conference when asked if he thought he was playing the best golf of his career and of his disappointment not to be selected to represent the United States. “I am playing better than Winged Foot [where he won the US Open in 2020]. If you look at it, it would have been nice to at least just have a call. There’s numerous people that I think Zach should have called out here, and we didn’t get that.
“I understand, I get it, but we’re nothing different. We’re still competing. We’re still working super hard to be the best we possibly can be.
“Brooks [Koepka] is obviously going to kill it for Team USA next week and excited for the team, but yeah, it definitely does sting a little bit, but say what you want, we’re still golfers, and I personally think that given the way I played this week, I could have definitely racked up some points for Team USA.
“But that’s neither here nor there. As time has gone on, hopefully I’ll be in line for it in a couple years.”
Despite his frustrations at missing out on Rome, he has the consolation of taking back-to-back LIV victories, each worth an individual $4 million, and he doubled up by leading his Crushers GC side to team glory as well. He follows Talor Gooch in becoming just the second player to win back-to-back LIV titles. He’s also done it in incredible fashion, closing out with a 63 in yesterday’s come-from-behind win, following on from the final-round 58 that saw him take victory at LIV Greenbrier back in August.
He declined to direct his ire at Zach Johnson, however, claiming not to be privy to the behind the scenes operations that saw just one LIV player getting a call from the captain, that being Brooks Koepka who did secure his place.
“I don’t know,” he responded when asked if Johnson was to blame. “I don’t know if it was, if it was back-ended or whatnot. I’m not up to make that discussion available. I have no idea what it was or how it was like or who made that decision, but it would have been nice for them to consider us more because we’re pretty damn good out here.”
