Richie O’Donovan shot a disappointing 12-over-par 83 to sit second from last place in the opening round of the VOG Western Cape on the Sunshine Tour.
O’Donovan, who began his quest to secure full Sunshine Tour status and a place in the co-sanctioned Sunshine and DP World Tour events with an impressive T8 finish at the Gary and Vivienne Player Challenge last month, combined a 43 front nine with a 40 back nine on the Devonvale Golf & Wine Estate layout.
Peter Moolman shot a first round five-under 66 to lead by two over CJ du Plessis. Moolman bogeyed the first hole but went on to card six birdies to take the lead heading into the second round.
Du Plessis combined four birdies, an eagle and three bogeys for his first round 68 to sit in second place.
There is a four-way tie for third place on two-under-par. A trio of South African’s, Louis Albertse, Albert Venter and Robin Williams alongside Mauritian Pierre Pellegrin all shot two-under 69s to trail Moolman by three shots.
Play was suspended just before 7pm with several players left to finish their opening rounds due to darkness.
Richie O’Donovan is scheduled to get his second round underway at 1.10pm local time, 12.10pm Irish time tomorrow.
