Dustin Johnson believes he would have been selected for the USA’s Ryder Cup team had he not defected to LIV Golf.
Johnson, previously part of the last five American teams will be taking an armchair role when the biennial contest tees off at the end of the month in Marco Simone, Rome.
The two-time major champion had five top-10 finishes this season but was not selected by his namesake Zach, having joined the Saudi backed tour in June of last year. However, he feels he could have added something to the team.
“I would love to be a part of the team,” Johnson, 39, told The Palm Beach Post. “But to be honest, I haven’t really played that well this year. But have I played well enough to be on the team? Yeah.
“I didn’t have the best year. Was it good enough to make the team? I think so.”
Johnson struggled to impress at the majors with just one top-10 finish coming at the US Open while the likes of Brooks Koepka (PGA Champion) and Bryson DeChambeau carried the LIV flag in the big four events.
“If I would have been playing on (the PGA Tour), yeah, I would have made the team. Do I think I can help the US team? Absolutely.”
“If I would have played a little better at the majors, I think I definitely would have had a really good chance to be on the team. But I just struggled a little bit in the majors this year, which happens.”
