Aideen Walsh’s valiant run at the US Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship came to an end in the last-16 as she lost out 4&3 to Kimberly Dinh at Stonewall (North Course).
Walsh lost the third hole to go 1DN and she was never able to wrestle back the ascendency as two further birdies and a par from Dinh were enough to win three more holes throughout the match and close it out on 15.
The Lahinch woman did however, claim a scalp in the last-32, beating three-time champion Sarah Lebrun Ingram on the 18th yesterday.
Dinh is the only player from last year’s quarter-finals to progress to the same stage this year.
“You can tell it’s drying out a little bit and getting a little more roll this afternoon than in the morning. I’m not the longest hitter so it’s nice to have a shorter club in. The greens are still pretty receptive, so you don’t have to be too cautious, and you can be a little more aggressive,” she said.
In a week that started with ten U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champions in the 132-player field, all of whom made it to match play, there are two remaining as the 36th iteration of the championship heads into the quarterfinals.
