Lahinch golfer Jenny Hennessy believes that despite not being able to call on Áine Donegan and Aideen Walsh her club could still retain the AIG Women’s Senior Cup.
The AIG All-Ireland Inter-Club finals take place at Dun Laoghaire this weekend with the Men’s Senior Cup, Men’s Barton Shield and Women’s Senior Foursomes also up for grabs.
Lahinch are the reigning champions in the AIG Women’s Senior Cup and having also been victorious in 2018 and 2019 they have plenty of experience heading into their clash with Kilkenny on Saturday morning.
However, they will have to do so without two of Ireland’s leading amateurs and Hennessy knows it will require a big team effort again.
“We’ll be missing our two top players this weekend, Áine Donegan, who has travelled back to play golf and study in LSU and Aideen Walsh, who is going to be competing in the Mid-AM over in the US,” Hennessy told the Golf Ireland Pod.
“So they will be a big loss for sure, hence why I need to find my A game, my B game is just not good enough this weekend. I definitely feel there is a bit of expectation to perform but we all want to play our best, we want to do ourselves proud, and we want to do our club proud.
“I just think we need to stay in the moment and just try our best.”
The action gets underway this morning with the AIG Women’s Senior Foursomes and the AIG Men’s Barton Shield. The quarter-finals are first up before the final four take to the course in the afternoon.
The AIG Women’s Senior Cup begins on Saturday with Royal Portrush, Co Louth, Kilkenny, Woodbrook, Cork, Co Sligo and Clandeboye all vying for Lahinch’s crown.
“Some people think we are practising morning, noon and night, meeting up, and we are really not,” said Hennessy.
“In the early years when there was a developing team we definitely did a lot of winter training. We worked on all areas of the game, we worked on swing mechanics, mental strength, strength and conditioning.
“We would have done everything years ago but now the team is quite well established. We are more or less left to our own devices so we’ll get together on Friday in Dun Laoghaire and come up with a game plan.
“We have strength and depth in our team, I know we have the ability but golf is a very unpredictable game so we’ll just have to see.
“Hopefully the golfing Gods will be in our favour this weekend but we’ll see what happens.”
