After Ireland’s ‘Famous Five’ from the victorious 2015 Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team failed to reach the dizzying heights expected of them, there is much optimism towards what Ireland’s ‘Fab Four’ on this weekend’s Walker Cup team can go on to achieve in the professional ranks.
One player eager to join the pro party in the future is Castle amateur Robert Moran who has made a good start to the First Stage of DP World Tour Q-School.
The Irish Close champion is currently inside the projected cut mark on two-over-par after opening rounds of 72 and 70 at the Players Club in Bristol.
The 24-year-old birdied two of his last four holes to edge to remain on two for the week after two rounds which is good enough for a share of 16th place with the top-19 advancing to Stage Two.
Moran was named on the initial GB&I Walker Cup panel last winter but didn’t make the final ten-man team for St Andrews this Saturday and Sunday but he has got straight down to work as he looks to build on his Close victory – his first national championship – and turn a largely frustrating season into one of his best.
Daniel Mulligan and Paul Murphy are in 36th on plus five while Joseph Hanney and Jack Madden are a shot further back while Devin Morley is plus eight and Luke Donnelly eleven-over.
