Robert MacIntyre heads to this week’s Tour stop in Switzerland quietly confident of climbing to the dizzy heights of automatic Ryder Cup selection.
MacIntyre retained his third place on the Rome selection points table following a superb finish at the Czech Masters and the Oban lefty produced a brilliant final round 66, his third six-under tally of the week to eventually share fourth place on 17-under par in Prague.
The result is MacIntyre’s sixth top-10 of the season, including his superb runner-up finish behind Rory McIlroy at last month’s Genesis Scottish Open.
The proud Scot went to Prague enjoying a 98 point lead over the fourth ranked Yannick Paul of Germany and now heads to the Swiss Alps 126 points clear of Paul on the qualifying table, and after Paul
MacIntyre really only needs to make the cut next week at Crans Montana, the final qualifying event, to be almost assured of automatic European selection ahead of Luke Donald announcing his full 12-man side next Monday afternoon September 2nd.
He said: “This is a massive result for me as there is so much riding on that dream to play in the Ryder Cup.
“I know I’m in a good position. I know I have a target on my back but I just love a fight and this is what I had to do this week. I didn’t play all that great the first three days but today I was so in control of the golf ball.
“I’m also rolling the ball well with the putter, absolutely perfectly now and that is what you need to do when you are trying to keep ahead”.
MacIntyre has visited Crans Montana in his career before and missed the cut on both occasions in 2019 and a year ago.
He said: “There’s more fight in me and I am a better player than I was when I was last in Switzerland.
“We’re doing some good work off the course with my team and this week will be a new week, so I’m looking forward to getting back in the deep end”.
Todd Clements captured a first DP World Tour title posting a closing round 63 to deny fellow Englishman Matt Wallace by a shot with a 22-under-par tally.
