Portumna golfer Suzanne Corcoran carded a second round 74 to go into a tie for the lead at the Irish Senior Women’s Open at Powerscourt.
The reigning Connacht Women’s Senior Open champion, finished on +1 after her second round, alongside Minna Kaarnalahti (NGCC).
Alan Condren (Greystones) extended his lead in the Irish Senior Men’s Stroke Play Championship also at the Wicklow venue, where he moved to -9.
But in the Women’s section, overnight leader Lisa Cullen (Grange Castle) shot an 81 to fall down to T5, although on +6 she is still well in contention, as is 2022 winner Laura Webb (Royal Portrush).
Corcoran was steady through her second round, which included four birdies and a double bogey on the last which cost her sole ownership of the lead going into Friday.
“I was very happy with the round. I played very solidly and was very focused on the hole I was playing. I hit a lot of fairways, a lot of greens and only had one three-putt,” said Corcoran.
“The highlight was getting to turn in -3, where my putting was excellent but I was disappointed with my last hole where I took a six, having hit into the trees.
“Overall very, very happy with my performance and to be the joint leader at end of 36 holes.”
Condren has also been in fine form this year and his -6 finish yesterday primed him for another strong showing in Round 2.
He went birdie, eagle on the first two holes and four more birdies throughout his round ensured he stayed five shots clear of Colin Cunningham (Carton House) in second and today’s lowest scorer Kevin Knightly (Royal Dublin), who shot a 66 to rise to -2.
“It would be fantastic to win. Yeah, would be a great achievement as my dad was a great senior player so to put my name on a senior trophy like him would be really special. We’ll just take one step at a time,” said Condren.
“I’m over the moon. I have played the course quite often and it is one of my favourite golf courses so the score’s going to reflect on that, and really happy.
“I had a great start yesterday and made a two on the first. Today I hit it about an inch away and also had an eagle on the second. Great start, settled me down and then it was very steady.
“Made a few mistakes near the end but happy enough overall.”
