Torrential rain on the third and final day of the Legends Tour’s JCB Championship forced play to be abandoned and a result called after 36 holes at England’s JCB Country Club.

The start to round three was postponed on several occasions as tournament organisers retained hope that the rain would ease at the event hosted by 2011 Open Championship winner Darren Clarke but the heavens refused to close and eventually, at 12pm, the round was abandoned and Englishman Peter Baker declared the winner.

Back-to-back rounds of 69 had seen Baker take a one-stroke lead over Vijay Singh after 36 holes, with Ernie Els and Steven Alker one further adrift on -4.

55-year-old Baker, who represented Europe at the 1993 Ryder Cup where he defeated Corey Pavin in Sunday singles in a 15-13 losing effort, is now a three-time Legends Tour winner and this was his second victory of the year having dominated the field at the Irish Legends event at Seapoint earlier this year.

Darren Clarke, who’d taken up the mantle of tournament host for the event, finished back in a tie for eighth at -1, alongside Colin Montgomerie, whilst reigning Senior Open champion Alex Cejka fared one better and took tied sixth at -2.
