Alex Maguire and John Gough attuned for their opening day four ball defeat in the Bonallack Trophy but they were unable to prevent Europe from falling five points behind heading into the final day in La Manga Golf Resort.

Laytown & Bettystown’s Maguire and Irish Amateur Open champion Gough combined to pick up one of Europe’s two wins on Friday as the continent were swarmed by Asia-Pacific.

In fact, Englishman Gough picked up 1.5 out of a total of 2.5 for Europe on day two and it wasn’t without stress as Europe won both their four ball matches on the 18th.

Maguire and Gough saw off Japanese duo Yuta Sugiura and Taichiro Ideriha on the last in the top match in the four ball session before Swedish pair Albert Hansson and Tobias Jonsson made it two from two in the session before Asia Pacific won the last three matches to pull five clear.

Gough had earlier scraped a half with compatriot Barclay Brown in the morning foursomes while Maguire and Welshman James Ashfield couldn’t reproduce their magic of Thursday and fell to a 3&2 loss.
