Alex Maguire won one and lost one on the opening day of the Bonallack Trophy as Europe and Asia Pacific couldn’t be separated at La Manga Golf Resort.

The scores are deadlocked at five points apiece with both sides winning a session each. Europe took the morning foursomes session 3-2 while the visitors won the four balls by the same margin.

Only one match went beyond 16 in the foursomes as Europe took a narrow lead into the afternoon. Laytown & Bettystown’s Maguire combined well with Welshman James Ashfield to win 5&4 over Lin Chuan-Tai and Malcolm Ting Siong-Hung in what could be a potential Walker Cup pairing next month.

In the afternoon four balls Maguire paired with Irish Amateur champion John Gough but they were beaten on the 18th by Japanese duo Taichiro Idehira and Yuta Sugiura.

Gough was also beaten 3&1 in the foursomes alongside compatriot Barclay Brown.
