Rory McIlroy has been cut into 7/1 from 8/1 with BoyleSports to add a fifth career major to his CV this week after he warmed up for The Open in perfect style in Scotland.
BoyleSports has vowed to offer top industry price on McIlroy getting his hands on the Claret Jug for the second time and has faced a deluge of support for the Holywood man after a final round of 68 at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick on Sunday denied Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre a victory at his home Open by a single shot.
McIlroy, having broken his duck of never having won in the land of golf’s birth, is now certain to start as favourite when he tees off on Thursday at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, the scene of his sole Open Championship triumph in 2014.
American World Number 1 Scottie Scheffler is rated McIlroy’s main danger at 8/1, with Masters champion Jon Rahm chalked up as 12/1 third favourite.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said:“Support was already strong for Rory McIlroy having won at Hoylake before, but his Scottish Open performance has only strengthened belief that his major drought will be over by Sunday evening.”
Each-way support is also growing for two-time Open champion Padraig Harrington, who has refused to rule out amending his schedule in a bid to qualify for September’s Ryder Cup in Italy. The 51-year old has been backed down to 100/1 from 150/1 following promising rounds of 66 and 67 at The Scottish Open, while a 12th place finish for Shane Lowry means he has also been clipped into 28/1 from 33/1 to land The Open for a second time.
A major championship debut is in store for County Meath amateur Alex Maguire, who is a 75/1 shot to be best of the Irish at Hoylake, but at 3/1 is a popular choice to make the cut in his bid for the top amateur’s silver medal, previously won by the likes of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
